Graduate Student Honors & Awards


There are four awards given by the department to Graduate Students. The deadline for nominations for all awards is April 15th each year. All awards will be given at the discretion of the Graduate Program Committee.

1.  Malcom E. Jewell Award
Awarded to the Outstanding Political Science Graduate Student ($100). Faculty must submit a formal letter of nomination to the DGS to be considered by the Graduate Program Committee. Any Graduate Student is eligible to receive this award.

2.  Ann-Marie Yanarella Award
Awarded to a graduate student who has demonstrated the best normative analysis of a public policy issue in a paper on a public policy and the common good ($100). Graduate students my self-nominate or be nominated by a faculty member. A copy of the paper must be submitted in hard copy and in an electronic form (.doc file) to the DGS.  The Graduate Program Committee will make the award. Any Graduate Student is eligible to receive this award.

3.  S. Sidney and Margaret L. Ulmer Graduate Student Research Paper Award
Awarded to a graduate student for the best research paper completed by a graduate student between April 15, 2010 and April 15, 2011 ($100). The paper must be based on upon original research in any area using any method. Graduate students may self-nominate or be nominated by a faculty member. A copy of the paper must be submitted in hard copy and in an electronic form to the DGS. The Graduate Program Committee will make the award.  Any Graduate Student is eligible to receive this award.

4.  S. Sidney and Margaret L. Ulmer Endowed Scholarship Award
Awarded to support the research of an outstanding graduate student in the area of Judicial Process or American Political Process ($500). The nomination must include a letter from the student outlining the research project and a letter of support from the student's advisor. The Graduate Program Committee will make the award.
